AI and a robot lab uncover greener hydrogen catalysts
Nature Communications researchers report an autonomous laboratory that paired an interpretable AI decision system with robotic electrochemistry to search 1,200 recipes for hydrogen-producing catalysts. In roughly four months—versus an estimated 600 days manually—it found previously unreported, earth-abundant recipes with activity competitive with platinum benchmarks and exposed useful chemical interactions. The work is a proof of concept; industrial durability, scale, and economics remain untested.
A REASON TO SMILE
When machines can test, explain, and refine ideas beside chemists, clean-energy materials may advance faster without hiding the reasoning.
